Below are Christine’s selects and what she had to say:

Essential: Films

Holy Motors (2012)

Directed by Leos Carax

I watched this film at its 2012 Cannes premiere and at the end of the screening, the whole Palais was on its feet for a standing ovation. Kylie Minogue was bawling and everyone was clapping in awe. Inside the theater, director Leos Carax, in his sunglasses and tux, stands up, lights a cigarette, and smokes the whole damn thing as he soaks in his standing ovation. So badass. Goals.

Dreams (1990)

Directed by Akira Kurosawa

This movie is everything.

Green Snake (1993)

Directed by Tsui Hark

I want to live in this movie. Maybe I did in a past life.

Enter the Void (2009)

Directed by Gaspar Noe

Deep and ballsy. Please and thank you.

Suspiria (2018)

Directed by Luca Guadagnino

I wish I made this movie.

Essential: Music Videos

‘Complicated’ Avril Lavigne (2002)

Directed by The Malloys

The video that made me appreciate all music videos.

‘Oblivion’ Grimes (2012)

Directed by Emily Kai Bock

Iconic. I’m really into things that feel effortless yet well made, and this is what this video feels like.

‘Kids Turned Out Fine’ A$AP Rocky (2019)

Directed by Dexter Navy

Also feels effortless, but I know the amount of work that probably went into this. So damn cool. An unmatched visual masterpiece. Every single detail, frame, character, transition – everything in this video was thought out. Not one detail feels overlooked. It’s perfect.

Not a music video, but… this needs to be mentioned: JLo’s 2018 VMA Vanguard Performance – I cried watching this.

Essential: Commercials

‘Yes or No’ Clear Blue Easy (1997)

Directed by David Lynch

What a collab. David Lynch. Pregnancy Test. It’s so normal, it’s creepy.

‘Welcome Home’ Apple (2018)

Directed by Spike Jonze

I love the set builds and visual tricks they pull off in this video practically. It’s so unassuming at first and then a whole world unravels itself by the end. I love FKA Twigs in this and the energy she single-handedly carries through her dance and performance. There’s something about this too that feels like watching theater, which I really appreciate.

ANY Skittles Commercial

They’re so weird. I love them.
